The Dade County High School Wolverine baseball team finally got back into action Monday afternoon when they hosted North Sand Mountain.

The Wolverines got some surprising news just before game time when they were told new Coach Brad Weir had resigned his coaching position.

Dade County Principal Josh Ingle informed the players of the decision and stated that Jamey McMahan would assume his position for the remainder of the season. Lay coaches Kerry Lacy and Josh Gifford will remain with the team as well.

Ingle told the Sentinel on Wednesday that Coach Weir had given him his letter of resignation on Monday afternoon. He did not resign his teaching position.

It didn’t take the Wolverines long to get on the scoreboard Monday against North Sand Mountain. Hayden Johnson reached on a pass ball after a strikeout to start the bottom of the first inning. Nic Gaddis then walked and Josh Core laid down a sacrifice bunt to put runners at second and third.

Garrett Moore then doubled down the right field line to score two runs. Moore would later score to put the Wolverines on top 3-0 after one inning of play.

The Wolverines would add another run in the second while Core sat down the Bison hitters in order the first three innings.

North Sand Mountain got their only hit of the game in the fourth inning on a blooper hit up the middle.

The Wolverines added another run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to claim a 7-0 win their first of the year against one loss.

Moore led the Wolverines with a pair of doubles and two runs batted in and two runs scored while Johnson had a triple and two runs scored.

In all the Wolverines picked up eight hits and played errorless ball on the damp, windy night.

Core pitched a complete game, allowing only one hit and striking out six.

The Wolverines were scheduled to play at Ridgeland on Tuesday afternoon but due to wet field conditions the game was postponed to today.

The Wolverines’ next home game is Tuesday against Lakeview Ft. Oglethorpe with game time set for 6 p.m.
