The Dade County
Lady Wolverines finally hit the court Friday night after a week of school
delays, early closings and one canceled game. On Tuesday night the game against
Coosa was canceled due to the weather.
The
region–leading Calhoun Lady Yellow Jackets came calling Friday with the Lady
Wolverines looking for revenge from an earlier loss where they had a sizeable
halftime lead only to lose in the fourth quarter.
Ansley Chilton
scored the game’s first points on a three point shot just 30 seconds into the
game and Abby Bradford would add a free throw later for a 4-0 lead after two
minutes of play.
The Lady Yellow
Jackets took their first lead of the game with three minutes remaining in the
first quarter, 7-6, with the Lady Wolverines regaining the lead with 1:59
remaining 10-9.
When the first
quarter ended it was the Lady Yellow Jackets on top 13-10.
The Lady
Wolverines opened the second quarter with six straight points, four by Sarah
Reid, to regain the lead 16-13 but the Lady Yellow Jackets scored the next
seven points to go up 20-16.
The remainder
of the first half was like a chess match with both teams swapping moves and
points and at the end of the half it was Calhoun 26, Dade 23.
The third
quarter could have been a disaster for either team as they both had trouble
finding the basket. The Lady Yellow
Jackets came out on top, 31-25, with only seven total points scored in the
third quarter.
Reid scored the
first points of the fourth quarter to get the Lady Wolverines to within four.
That would be
as close as they would get however as the Lady Yellow Jackets scored the next
seven points for an 11 point lead and the Lady Wolverines were never able to
get close again.
When the game
ended the Lady Yellow Jackets had improved to 8-0 in region play with a big
50-37 win over the Lady Wolverines.
That leaves the
Lady Wolverines in third place in region standings with a big game coming up at
home Friday night against Armuchee who also has a 4-3 record. The Lady
Wolverines defeated them earlier in the year.
Reid led the
Lady Wolverines with 10 points in the game and was the only one scoring in
double figures. Erika Woodfin added nine and Chilton seven.
The Lady
Wolverines faced Model last night in another important region game.
