(LEFT) - Post Commander Beverly Hawkins and Bill Lockhart sort flags for disposal. Hawkins said that the American Legion post already has a number of flags that will be put to rest in early August.
Previous to Flag Day, June 14, 1923, there were no federal or state regulations governing display of the United States Flag. It was on this date that the National Flag Code was adopted by the National Flag Conference, which was attended by representatives of the Army and Navy, which had evolved their own procedures, and some 66 other national groups.
According to the Flag Code, “The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.” Dade County’s own American Legion Post 106 is offering to dispose of flags that have been worn to the point of needing disposal. The service, which is part of the Legion’s flag drive, will culminate in a flag retirement ceremony to be held sometime in early August, according to post member Bill Lockhart.
Post Commander Beverly Hawkins said this is an important endeavor.
“As far as I know, no one else in the community offers this service,” she said.
In a press release, the Legion said they believe that every household and business should proudly display an American Flag. In July they will not only be collecting flags for proper disposal, but they will be selling 3x5 foot American Flags for $5 each, or $50 per dozen.
“As veterans we want to do this because there is a proper way to treat and dispose of the flag,” Hawkins said.
